Serving as a Accounting Technician GS-0525-5 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in the Chief Financial Officer Directorate.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an accounting technician. As an accounting technician you are responsible for daily oversight of accounts payable or accounts receivable functions to provide advice and accounting service regarding payment or collection issues and requirements for FLETC divisions and serviced Department of Homeland Security (DHS) components.

Typical duties include:

  • Receiving, researching, examining, interpreting, analyzing, auditing, classifying and processing payable or accounts receivable functions in a timely manner.
  • Ensuring payments, collections and deposits are processed in a timely manner, adhering to regulations and cost-effective accounting procedures, thereby preventing lost discounts, interest penalties and delinquent accounts.
  • Providing professional advice and assistance. Serving as a technical authority by explaining, interpreting and processing a diverse and thorough knowledge of federal laws and Principles of Federal Appropriation Law, DHS and FLETC directives, policies and procedures, as well as a good working knowledge of Comptroller General decisions and associated requirements spanning the spectrum of accounts receivable, accounts payable and disbursing functions.
  • Training and mentoring to new accounting technicians. Providing advice and assistance to new employees on revised methods, procedural guidelines, daily practices and special techniques for completed required work.

To qualify for this position:

  1. You must possess at least 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service, to include utilizing accounting procedures, techniques and terminology; entering and retrieving data in an automated accounting and/or billing system; and reconciling, adjusting, balancing, and maintaining accounting transactions. OR
  2. Have successfully completed 4 years (120 semester hours) of education obtained in an accredited college or university in any field. You must provide a copy of your transcripts OR
  3. An equivalent combination of successfully completed education and experience. You must provide a copy of your transcripts. Only semester hours in excess of first 60 hours will be credited.
Note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience for Clerical and Administrative Support Positions and Technical and Medical Support Positions.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

The first assessment will consist of a set of questions designed to evaluate the degree to which you possess the skills needed to perform the duties of the positions being filled. These questions are scored, and you must score at least 85 out of 100 points in order to be evaluated in the second assessment.

The second assessment will be a presentation of a completed accounting related problems. Applicants who score a minimum of 85 on the assessment questionnaire will be evaluated to further assess an applicant's technical proficiency as it relates to the position.
